Fumanya dinosaurs

Fígols

The museisation project of the DINOSAURES DE FUMANYA INTERPRETATION CENTER represents the last phase of the Ruta Minera Consortium’s star project. The project is about Fumanya’s open-cast mining, active between 1975 and 1986, which exposed an impressive paleontological site with more than 3,500 dinosaur fingerprints over 65 million years old.

The relationship between dinosaurs and coal is direct: they disappeared 65 million years ago, in the late Cretaceous, when the lignite was formed and in which the geomorphological formation of the Pyrenees verticalized what had This is the extraordinary relationship between geology, mining and paleontology: between the Pyrenees, dinosaurs and coal.

The Fumanya site, in the municipality of Fígols, was declared a National Cultural Interest (BCIN) in 2014, and is part of the candidacy that seeks to be a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with other sites of icnites of the Iberian Peninsula.
